Happy Gnu Year, everybody.

I am looking for a GPS navigator (receiver and display) and would naturally prefer one running on (as) free (as possible) software. I found a few earlier threats on this topic:

https://trisquel.info/en/forum/libre-gps-hardware

The - lack of - answers to those OPs are kind of disheartening but I shall try again. I can't seem to find such by search, but does anyone here know of - even at rumour level - such a device?

I don't believe the answers have changed.

there is a diy option
in the #zipit irc channel ask hinv about buying one.

got little pspmaps and navit working on it. hardware struggles with
non-local route planning. pspmaps uses google for getting a route plan,
so with wifi (non-free firmware or use free usb one.) you can get a
route plan more easily.
you need a serial or usb gps. i have goodie packs for adaptors and bits
i can sell for at cost.

other wise your options....

maybe Chip handheld can be turning into a free gps (there software stack
as unnecessary non-free bits which have free replacements.).

wait for eoma-68 handheld little device, going to be ages for that, but
i look forward to the day. :)

wait for a http://pyra-handheld.com/ . loads of little bits of non-free
firmware but at least the cpu is free unlike intel.

on GPD pocket mini laptop, nonfree wifi,bt,cpu but available for £280~ i
forget the flash sale price

install ubuntu and config navit + bluetooth gps which is a bit fiddly
but works or use usb one.

If you have a device that can run Replicant with GPS, that would do the trick; you could use OsmAnd~, ZANavi, or Navit (all found in the F-Droid repo). But I don't think any Replicant-supporting phones support GPS with libre software, so that's partly just theoretical.

A device with GNU/Linux like the Pyra should theoretically be fine, too, if you add GPS to it somehow. In that case I suppose you would use Navit.

These are all interesting devices which I would personally like to try out. However, I am looking for a device that I can persuade my to use too (in the car). It seems that I will not find a such running on free software. In that case I will have to find consolation in the fact that a simple GPS navigator has to transmitter!

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.
