We currently have to go to jxself's page to get an external repo in order to get the latest linux-libre kernel.

Why can't these packages also be compiled from the freesh source and dropped into the Trisquel repos? There wouldn't be naming conflicts with the metapackages and the kernels themselves.

I ask because the current 3.13 kernel is too old and having newer kernels without another source or PPA would be helpful to support new hardware. Especially since Trisquel is LTS only and long gaps between releases.

That is very simple. Trisquel comes with it own kernels. As Ubuntu comes
with its own kernels. So, if you are using the kernels from another
project, than you should ask for help though the respective channels.

Trisquel does include packages not in the standard Ubuntu repos all the time.

It's just that I got an Nvidia GTX 970 recently and having later kernels actually let's me boot with it connected without using Ubuntu with the non-free drivers.

The 3.19 kernel, when its released, will support the chipset better and so will Noveau.

I suppose the other option is to run a netinstall and use the external repo to get the kernel before I install a desktop environment.

My research about linux-libre led me to this web sites ABOUT linux-libre kernel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux-libre

Linux-libre (/ˈlɪnəks ˈliːbrə/) is an operating system kernel and a GNU package[3] that is maintained from modified versions of the Linux kernel. The aim of the project is to remove any software that does not include its source code, has its source code obfuscated or released under proprietary licenses from the Linux kernel.

The parts that have no source code are called binary blobs and are mostly proprietary firmware which, while generally redistributable, do not give the user the freedom to modify, redistribute or study them. Linux-libre is a prominent example of free software

“Why can't these packages also be compiled from the freesh source and dropped into the Trisquel repos?”. They can, but I suppose that the reason is that Trisquel is not a rolling release, but uses feature freezing. Once a Trisquel version is released, don't expect functionality upgrades (But you should expect and check that there are security upgrades).

I guess wait until the next point release of Ubuntu 14.04, which will use 3.16 (which will reach Trisquel deblobbed)
