Hello,
which heat sink/fan do you use on your D8?
The D8 main board has socket C32. Fans for this socket are rare on the market.
Maybe fans for other sockets are also compatible, has anybody tried it?
What are your experiences?

I have a case fan and a water cooling system for the CPU. I can't remember the reference of the water cooling, I can check. For the case fan, it was installed as I bought it, I would need to open it to check.

The case fan is a bit noisy. The CPU temperature is usually 35°C and I don't think I ever saw it reaching 40°C, so the water cooling looks pretty efficient. I want to try disconnecting the case fan to see how it goes, maybe the cooling is still good enough. Note that I have only one processor and it is an Opteron 4256 EE, which is designed for lower power consumption. I used the water cooling alone (case fan disconnected) with a higher power consumption processor for 2 years, but I can't remember the CPU temperature then. That said, the water cooling died after 2 years (no more liquid and pump broken).

I also had a water cooling system for my 1st cpu. It broke when I tried to upgrade it with a second cooler for my 2nd cpu. I used a noisy fan for my 2nd cpu. It is a Dynatron, but I don't know any details.

I have 2 of the AMD Opteron 4284

Now I am looking for an alternative.

In a german forum about looking for a cooler for C32 socket I red:
"Regarding your actual cooler, you have a wide range of options: almost all S940/939/754 coolers are compatible. For AM2, AM2+, AM3, AM3+, and FM1 coolers, compatibility is only possible if they are secured with retention clips." (translated)

I don't know if I should try a cooler which is not specifically designed for C32 sockets.

The Noctua NH-U9B SE2, for example works with my C32 socket, but you need the right screws to mount it. I just removed the 2 screws and replaced them with others that fit.

The official specifications[1] are the follows:
Noctua NH-U9B SE2 Socket compatibility: Intel LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA1155, LGA1150, LGA775, LGA2011 on request, Asus X-socket™ & AMD AM2, AM2+, AM3, AM3+, FM1, FM2, FM2+ (backplate required)

I got a computer with a liquid cooler, and being the type of user that uses the system 24/7 and likes to run it fast and hard, without restrictions, after some years I had a little spurt of coolant on my graphics card

When I saw that happen, I literally freaked out. The entire liquid cooler assembly is sitting above, the mother board, and the external graphics card, all of the hardware, and it's nasty stuff that will drip around where ever it wants to go, and then later dry, and become nearly impossible to completely clean/remove.

After having that experience I have decided that liquid coolers are literally the dumbest thing we could possibly put into our computers. If it wasn't for that component threatening all of my hardware, I'm sure the PC would last 20+ years. The things are generally rock solid(desktop)

Also I learned that buying a good quality fan, actually is capable of better heat displacement, than a liquid cooler, which for performance is a must. If you can't actually keep your stuff cool well enough, then your performance will reflect the fact. If you want crisp rock solid performance, you need persistent effective cooling. It's nice that it's quiet. But honestly that has never in my life bothered me. I like the sound of computer fans, and keyboards... clicking mice, startup sound effects... that's the mark of a real computer user... in my opinion

(although I do try to buy silent keyboards and mice now... I think those are must)

(the latest graphics cards btw, run so hot, they will heat up an entire small room by themselves)
