How to read long discussion threads

To read new messages in a discussion thread, I click on the thread and then on "new". When there are more than 50 messages, they are split in two pages, and new messages may be on the first and/or on the second page. However, clicking "new" gets only to one page and then, if going to the other page, there is no way to see which messages are new.

Does anyone know a way to see new messages on multiple pages? Currently, I just stop reading.

You can search the date you last read the thread and the subsequent ones, but that is not ideal.

As a general rule, two-page threads are derailed threads, so you are probably not missing out on much anyway. If you believe you may still have an interest in a long-winded thread, you could try subscribing to the corresponding mailing list and hope that the sync machinery is up. This will hopefully be solved in the next version of the website.

Three-page threads and beyond are collector archaeological artefacts.

You are right, not being able to find new messages on a multi-thread pages is perhaps a nice feature rather than a bug.

I am subscribed to the mailing list, I infrequently get messages from people who post to it directly, but nothing from the forum. Fixing that could be nice.

Now I think about it, there may be some other reason than a technical glitch behind this: forum users may not be aware that their email address is being forwarded to a mailing list to which they have not subscribed.
