Icedove fails to connect to pop server at aol.com

Some years ago, Verizon gave up on its email customers and shifted to either aol (my account) or
yahoo (everyone else). I still have a verizon.net mmail address for last-resort communications.
In the middle of June the settings got changed, and since then my only method of reading emails
on my aol.com account is to login to www.aol.com, which I would rather not do, as the aol.com
email page has too many popup ads and spam, all from aol.
To read my emails, I pop them down with Icedove, which works fine for everything except aol,
and now not at all from aol. Icedove takes close to forever to give up and tell me that there's
a server error and that I should try again later. It's not a password issue, as I successfully
use that password to log in directly to mail at aol.com with my verizon.net address. It may be
a server issue, as I occasionally get a reply that there's no mail to download, which is false,
as I have new mail in the aol.com account dating from late June to the present.
The server isn't imap.aol.com, as icedove receives an instant negative reply when I attempt to
pop my verizon.net mail from imap.aol.com; not pop.verizon.net; nor pop3.verizon.net. Those
last two both eventually give up and return that "try again later" message.
I'm using Etiona on a Lenovo T420 with 8 GB of RAM.

Those are the documented servers though:

Maybe you should indeed "try again later".
"Try again later ?" ... it's been almost three months, since mid-June.
I've tried all the settings that the two links suggested. However, POP3 appears
to reference a protocol that removes the messages from the server; my present
POP protocol allows me to leave the messages on the server essentially forever.
That's what my main server allows for everything else. My AOL account is
separate; I'm trying to get that material through Icedove, just like all the
others, which I get from the cPanel account provided by my ISP. AOL wants $$
for help. I'll just forward the few that are there to myself rather than
continue this struggle.
I'll not use gmail. Are there better email-only accounts available ? Has to be
separate from my main ISP, InmotionHosting.com.
The choice of an email provider comes up every year or so on this forum. The last thread was probably https://trisquel.info/forum/lets-talk-about-secure-email-providers
I was going to say "try a free protonmail account", but that's probably no good for you. I don't think you can do POP3 or IMAP with a free protonmail account - I think that the free one only gives you access to the webmail client. Maybe you could try Tutanata? I don't know much about Tutanata, but a lot of people like it. Maybe it will do what you want. Or Disroot. No, scratch that, I'm reading on Tutanata's page that they do not allow IMAP or POP3 into a client like Icedove. You have to use their own client and only IMAP is available. Looks like Disroot might allow it.
With OVH, if you buy a domain name, you have a 5GB mailbox with POP3 and IMAP access. When you have it, there is an option called "MX plan" from which you can get additional 5GB mailboxes for a very small price (and you pay once and keep them as long as you keep the domain name). That option is not easy to find though.
I have been using this for more than 10 years without any problem.
The only drawback is the website with JavaScript (and a bit complicated, so many options).
To andyprough,
> I don't think you can do POP3 or IMAP with a free protonmail account
Yes, gratis Protonmail account does not give POP/IMAP ability.
Disroot's or Mailo's one does.
After carefully considering all my choices of alternative email providers, I discovered
in AOL's settings the option to forward automatically all incoming email to another
address. I have plenty of those on my main ISP; that way I'll get quick notifications
without having to negotiate AOL's annoying mail page.
Thanks.
