Intel audio noise

I have a Thinkpad T61 with an Intel audio card (Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)).

I've noticed that with Trisquel I often get a lot of static noise when a sound plays, such as when someone signs in on pidgin, and sometimes when playing a video.

I previously used gNewSense and never had this problem.

Anyone else noticed it, and more importantly does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem?

Thanks.

I think I might have sorted it.

In /etc/pulse/daemon.conf

I had a line that said

resample-method = src-linear

I've had a look on another identical laptop that I use for running any old garbage, it's currently running the ubuntu 9.10 alpha (performance bodes well for future releases of Trisquel!) and that line (which was the only line that was different) says:

resample-method = speex-float-1

According to an Ubuntu forum post the different options you can place there are

src-sinc-best-quality, src-sinc-medium-quality, src-sinc-fastest, speex-float-{10-0}, speex-fixed-{10-0}, ffmpeg, src-zero-order-hold, src-linear, trivial

And apparently these are listed in order of quality, from highest to lowest. Higher quality will use more cpu though. As you can see src-linear is second to last in quality.

I changed that and restarted just to be sure, seems to be okay so far. If you want to try that and see how it goes and report back either way that would be helpful.

If this solves the issue it'd be nice if Trisquel would default to this.

Wow, thank you for the reply, I'll try with "src-sinc-best-quality" and
let see what happens...

Hi aitux,

Could you please tell me how that went for you?

I was playing around with speex-float-3 yesterday and even that I noticed resulted in a lot of cpu usage, about 5% (on a core2duo 2.2 ghz) and that was causing static when I was playing a youtube video using swfdec. But dropping it to speex-float-1 like I had previously solved the issue.

It seems to me that this is probably about the optimal point. Going for the highest setting I've heard can use up to 60% of the cpu and you won't notice the difference anyway.

For the moment, I'm do not notice any noise since I changed the sound
preferences, and the CPU seems to work as always. Swfdec works fine for
me if don't run heavy programs at the same time, for example I'm just
running swfdec now and writting this email at the same time without any
problem and both CPUs (Core 2 duo 2.0 GHz) are more ore less at 50%.

If you haven't tried the fix I suggested earlier, could you try setting in pidgin's preferences under the sound tab:

command -> paplay %s

See if that fixes things.
