iOS Alternatives?

I got my hands on a discarded iphone4 and I'm wondering if anyone here knows of any software replacements for iOS, similar to how you can install Rockbox on an iPod.
I'm definitely not planning on using the phone for its intended purpose, so I figured I'd ask/search around and see if there were any cool hacks using one. If not I'll probably just toss it since I refuse to use any of Apple's operating systems.
theres a project called idroid which is an attempt to port android to the iphone
the websites currently down so here is a web archive link:

its most likley going to contain non-free firmware but for the iphone i think its the best your going to get!
"If not I'll probably just toss it since I refuse to use any of Apple's operating systems."
if you are going to get rid of it i would recommend selling it
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure about the ethics of selling a piece of hardware that is either malicious or impossible to use without proprietary software. I don't think it's a terrible thing to do (those who would buy it probably would have just gotten it somewhere else), but I don't know, I kind of feel like it's ethically better to recycle it if it's reasonable for your financial situation.
That was kind of my reasoning for tossing it rather than selling it.
what about selling it and then donating the money to the fsf or the trisquel project?
it just seems like a lot of money to just throw away when it could go to better use.
also i think the people buying it almost certainly would of got it elsewhere its not like your promoting it.
I doubt it's significant enough to truly make a difference. Besides, unless you're living in abject poverty to the point where you can't afford to waste anything, there's going to be spending on luxuries you don't need. If you're a responsible spender, giving the phone to a company for raw materials rather than selling it is probably just going to mean less money for those luxuries.
Besides, it's not that huge of an amount of money in the grand scheme of things unless you're really poor. We're talking maybe somewhere between $50 and $100 typically, no more than maybe 20 hours of work at a minimum-wage job, being pessimistic. And you're doing this, what, once every couple of years at most? You probably spend way more than that in this time frame on other things.

based on what i have seen on ebay id day you could sell it for about £80 ($123.35)
if you sell someone something that the purchaser would buy anyway elsewhere and them give the money from it to a ethical organization like the fsf.
is there a ethical flaw?
With the same arguments you could also justify to sell drugs or weapons and give the money to some good organisation afterwards.
I mean, your costumers would by it anyway, right?
So yeah, if you're really hardcore on the fsf philosophy, it's ethically wrong.
"With the same arguments you could also justify to sell drugs or weapons and give the money to some good organisation afterwards."
with drugs and weapons these are things that (in a lot of places) are hard to obtain
and in many cases you may be selling them to people that would have quite a hard time getting them elsewhere and this is clearly unethical (depending of your view of weather certain drugs should be legalized)
in the case of the iphone4 if someone is going to buy a second hand iphone4 they are very plentiful
so in this case you could say is it unethical to sell people tobacco which is just about everywhere on earth easy to get
i would say its not as people would definitely get it elsewhere easily and so you are not causing any damage to anyone by assisting there addiction
if you were to start advertising the tobacco/iphone4 and try to get people to purchase it then this would be unethical.
but just selling it in a market were the product is plentiful and you will have no effect of peoples purchase of it.
i rely can see anything wrong with this.
I don't think it's a huge problem, but at the same time, I don't think that it's good, especially not to the point where I would actively tell people that they should make a point of selling such hardware.
"with drugs and weapons these are things that (in a lot of places) are hard to obtain"
So what - if more people would sell drugs and weapons, it would get easier to obtain them. So in short, if a lot of people do something wrong, it becomes ok?
This can't be.
You can't base the ethics of your doing on how many other people are doing it.
If you just think of the total outcome (i.e. "will this person get drugs in the end if i'm not selling it?") you can always justify a lot of bullshit.
It's the same as arguing: The environment will get polluted anyway, no matter if i throw my garbage there or not.
I'm not blaming you or anything; we can't alway do things 100% ethical, right?
I'm just saying: in theory, it's not ok.
i do agree with you but if you donate all the money you get from it to an organization like the fsf or people who need it
would this not be doing more good than bad?
Sell it on Ebay and get another phone (Tomlukeywood's phone?) and donating the rest of the money to the FSF and/or investing it in a firm which stock price is on the up?
Sell it, don't toss it. Electronic waste is a huge issue. If you don't want to sell it, give it to someone that could use it, maybe even a broke person. Regardless of ethics, you could be helping someone.
"give it to someone that could use it"
if your giving it to someone else you could sell it and ether give them the money or a free(er) phone with the money
Then it still goes to someone, does it not? :)
I like the idea of selling it and donating the money. I could probably get at least $100 for it, so that's $100 to go towards some free software project I'd probably donate to anyway. Good idea Tom!
