Is there any newer libre kernel available as a backport perhaps? Or would I harm anything by downloading the 2.6.38.6 and compiling it from the libre site? I've got a geforce 470 and want to grab newer nouveau drivers to see if I can gain any desktop effects at all.

Sounds like getting the Debian 64 bit 38.x kernel will be the easiest for me. I'm off to read Gdebi man page to give it a go.

It should only be a matter of right-clicking on the DEB file and choosing GDebi. Do not remove the other kernel... and please report here if this easy solution actually works (the kernel is a sensible component)!

Updated linux base from the same page by following to it's download location and all appears to be fine. I'm booted into the machine on that kernel now. Sound works, X works. Gonna test effects now.

Apparently nvidia saw fit to keep me from using decent open drivers by making any attempt to use the card need firmware. what a world. sometimes i pray for a violent revolution
