lavabit and evolution email

I've had a horrific few days with getting evolution to work with both yahoo and lavabit. The yahoo settings that worked I already wrote down in a separate thread, here are the lavabit settings that worked - this is not a question but really just a write down for future users. I strongly recommend using thunderbird instead of evolution. It is far easier and free software as well..
Receiving Email:
Server Type: POP
Server: lavabit.com
Port: 110
Security: TLS encryption
Authentication Type: Password
Sending Email:
Server Type: SMTP
Server: lavabit.com
Port 465
Use secure connection: SSL encryption
Authentication Type: PLAIN
The needed settings for Lavabit.com are available here (https://lavabit.com -> "help" -> "Configuration Settings"): https://lavabit.com/settings.html
I had no trouble with it in Evolution, though I do not use other mailing servers.
Once, I tried to configure Evolution to use both the "SSL" ports (993 for IMAP and 465 for SMTP) and the TLS encryption; Evolution shouted "No STARTTLS support" or "STARTTLS command not found". That was a while ago; note that the "Configuration Settings" page states only there is support for TLS encryption through STARTTLS with the ports not set as default for SSL encryption.
I didn't have problems with Lavabit myself. I do use Thunderbird now, though, because it's a lot easier to set up. I hope the trademark problem can be resolved sometime in the future.
What trademark problem? Is Thunderbird non-free? If yes, why is it in the Trisquel repositories?
Thunderbird is free software. The problem is: it recommends non-free extensions and non-free searchplugins.
What Magic Banana said. But to clarify, the "trademark problem" I mentioned is that you can't use Mozilla trademarks in commercial distributions of the software, and you also can't use the trademarks in modified versions, which means Firefox or Thunderbird cleaned of the nonfree plugins needs rebranding (hence, Abrowser). This hasn't been done for Thunderbird in Trisquel yet.
Thank you very much, I'm glad I managed to get evolution to work after all then...
There are standard procedures for how email is transferred.
You send email via SMTP through port 587. For encrypted connection you use STARTTLS. Sometimes you can use port 25, but that's non-standard for submitting mails. Also, you can use port 465 for encrypted connection without STARTTLS, but that's non-standard.
For receiving email you use POP or IMAP. People prefer one or the other. POP is more simple, IMAP is more advanced.
For POP you use port 110, STARTTLS for encryption. Alternatively, you use port 995 for encrypted connection without STARTTLS, which is also standard and a matter of choice.
For IMAP you use port 143, STARTTLS for encryption. Or 993 for encryption without STARTTLS, which is also standard.
thanks mampir, but this is not a question, I posted my settings for documentation only
I followed the settings guide but I am having problems sending mails, a message box appears after I enter the password saying "Unable to authenticate to SMTP server. Bad authentication response from server." I tried changing the given ports but nothing worked. Though IMAP works fine!
