I recently got a Thinkpad Helix, the only problem I can find in order to
run Free Software on it is the wifi drivers.
Is there any way to utilize the Intel wifi chip but not install the
lwlwifi package?

No. Intel WiFi chips depend on proprietary software because Intel has refused to release the source of the software under a free license. Maybe until someone reverse engineers this although, as far as I know, no one is working on this. And even if they started it would take a very long time. Maybe it's time to get one of those USB WiFi nubs: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wireless-networking-gnulinux

Only the first generation ThinkPad Helix is acceptable, because it was based on IvyBridge and therefore without Boot Guard. Any later generation Helix has Boot Guard that denies users' right to replace the broken-beyond-repair firmware, which has a "white-list" that prevents users from replacing the WLAN adapter with an "unauthorized" one.

So an ath9k-htc is necessary. Just forget the Intel WLAN adapter.
