Can Medibuntu be safely installed without installing any non-free software?
Medibuntu seems to seperate free and non-free software:
http://medibuntu.org/repository.php
Actually I would like to know how I can capture .MP3 audio using VLC from a TV card. I received the following error:
It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder:
MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3.
If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
A similar error also appears when I try to encode in .AAC format:
It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder:
MPEG AAC Audio.
If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
Is there a free software solution to this problem?
I would probably need this file but it is clearly non-free:
http://packages.medibuntu.org/lucid/libavcodec-extra-52.html
I tried to encode in Theora using FLAC or Vorbis audio but the quality was poor. H.264 was better but there was no sound. I captured without any compression using mencoder but size was huge (around 600 MB for each minute) so real time encoding is obviously preferred.

libavcodec-extra-52 is free software, licensed under GPL/LGPL, and
available in slaine-updates.
Thanks. The reason it is under non-free is because of the problems concerning libfaac0's license. Can I use the package on Taranis?

What are those?
The problem is discussed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/faac/+bug/374900
https://bugs.launchpad.net/medibuntu/+bug/792963
It is also discussed here:

Our version is not linked to faac, so nothing to worry here.
Thanks for the reply.
How do I install this on Taranis?

Well, it's only available on slaine by now, I'll compile it for taranis.
It should hit the mirrors tomorrow.
Thanks. Hopefully I can at least create MP3 files using VLC.
Unfortunately installing this software requires removing FFmpeg by default (clicking no a few times also provides the option to downgrade):
sudo aptitude install libavcodec-extra-52

No.
> Medibuntu seems to seperate free and non-free software
They don't seem to be doing a good job at it.
Rubén Rodríguez, thanks for the reply. Could you please elaborate your answer? The free section of Medibuntu seems to include software released under a free license that might not be appropriate such as hot-babe (explicit content) and aacplusenc (a patent encumbered aac encoder).
On a similar note, Handbrake doesn't seem to be entirely free software as it installs the non-free FAAC to encode AAC files, so it would probably need to be recomplied in order to be added to Trisquel.
