New Trisquel MATE live cd

Hello,
I created a live cd version of trisquel with the MATE desktop environment installed. It appears to work, except that I can't get Ubiquity running once the live session is up. It simply crashes without output. Any suggestions? I had hoped to deliver something relatively finished, but I am having trouble making it work.
Anyone who wants to try it can find my ISO image here:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B2qC9qLfYBH4VmJhVmlDYVhnaFU
I will upload the md5 sum in a few minutes.
The username for the live session is ubuntu. There is no password.

Great news!!! Is user home folder encryption included in this release?
I was waiting for a long time for a release like this and will test it as soon as I can!

Just by curiosity. How did you made this ? Did you compile the Trisquel ISO with Mate or did you use any kind of "Debian CD Creator" software ?

@aliasbody:
I started from a Trisquel netinstall (Barebones + samba and SSH via Tasksel), and installed the MATE Repos. From there, I followed these instructions:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MakeALiveCD/DVD/BootableFlashFromHarddiskInstall

The distro itself seems to work like this.

@alisee
If Cryptfs (encryption software used in trisquel) is included in the Trisquel base, it is in this. If not, I will try to include it in my next round.
I am glad there is interest.
Please be warned though that it should be considered alpha, maybe beta status. I haven't been able to get it installed to HD because of the problem above.
Happy Hacking.

IS IT FOUND IN THE REPOSITORY?

Do You mean Trisquel's?
The answer is no, I had to add mate Repos to build this.
I don't think you have to worry though because MATE is based off of Gnome 2 which was GPL licensed. Just stay away from the section that says "nonfree".

Oh and by the way, I use getdeb a lot for games. Consequently it ended up on my cd image. I disabled it by default because I don’t know how well they separate free and nonfree games. It should be OK to use if you check licences carefully.

I think it should be also possible to simply use the 12.04 mate-desktop.org repositories & yes the MATE Desktop Environment is licensed under GPL license and should be more free than most of the bioses that are used by many Intel users out there!

Not really a good example. By that standard all non-free software is OK. None of it is OK. It is an example of an extremely difficult situation to avoid with no good solution. In comparison there are many free desktop environments. There shouldn't be anything wrong with MATE though anyway from an ethical or free software perspective so your still OK here. Even though it comes from the Linux Mint project the developers aren't writing non-free code. There bundling non-free code. There is a difference. So while it is OK to use the code which they produce it isn't OK to use the distribution if your going to be avoiding non-free software (to the fullest extent possible).

When you click the Trisquel icon in the lower left to see the applications, how do you turn the entire menu into a transparent smoke color like with Gnome 2 in Trisquel 4.0?

I haven't been able to find the correct setting. I am still looking. One thing you could try if you have time is to download Trisquel 4 and compare the .gnomeconf directories and the mateconf directories in your home folder. This DOES NOT apply to gnome fallback, which is configured differently.

hey, I just tested your distribution and I really adore it. I think it would be nice to rename the main user to trisquel and maybe add some themes like Faenza and some opensource wallpapers. Thanks for your wonderful work & if you need some help with adding and moding themes, I could help you!

I fixed the Username and host to read "trisquel". The fixes will appear in my next release.
For anyone who wants them sooner, the varibles that control the live user session are in "/etc/casper.conf" If you want to see these changes you will need to repackage the ISO by following the instructions in the link on Post #4.

Regarding your offer, do you know where the attribute for the background color for the menus is stored? I looked for it a few days ago, but could not find it. If you could, I would be much obliged if you could tell me where it is. Regarding theming in general, I like the idea of having a Trisquel-mate-desktop package that would handle the "Trisquel Look" aspect of things. If you know about how to build packages and have the time, packaging the Trisquel 4 theme for MATE might also be useful.
Your offer of assistance is greatly appreciated!

If you can nail the OS to look EXACTLY like Trisquel 4 to 5, then you are one step closer to bringing consistency to this operating system. Even though this is based on the Trisquel 5.5 repos, I have a feeling it could look great too with 6.

Theming is definitely on the TODO list, but there are a couple of serious bugs that I have to deal with first. If you would like to help with any aspect of the project, I would appreciate all the hands I can get!
I rather like the double bar theme, but I can understand why many prefer Trisquel's current default. I was thinking of making it optional as to whether or not the user could have Trisquel's or MATE's default theme.

Does anyone know why Ubiquity isn't working? Checking dmseg revealed nothing. What log should I check in to see errors?

If you're enjoying the hanging install bug, either kill the hung wget or install without network connection.

I had the same issue, I think, with ubiquity. I built a customized Trisquel
on a Sugar Toast (TOAST). Sorry I found no answer. I used ruben's
makeiso.sh scritps to build the TOAST. Maybe try basing on 6.0?

This is not a file retrieval bug, I discovered that the problem is in line 6 of the script.
This was the output from a python debugger:
(/usr/bin/ubiquity:6):
6 import sys

The weird part is that this sys library looks pretty common
http://effbot.org/librarybook/sys.htm

I may be trying the Triquel 6.0 ISO soon.

Based on the frequency of the news releases on its website (once a month), MATE looks well alive.

The inclusion in Trisquel's repositories is not forecast if that is what you wanted to know. Indeed MATE is not in Ubuntu's repositories (including that of the upcoming 13.04 version) and Trisquel's development starts with copying most of the packages in the related Ubuntu version (very few packages are added). MATE is not even in Debian's repositories (including the experimental suite) and most Ubuntu packages are copied from Debian GNU/Linux.

That said, the PPA for the related Ubuntu version (Trisquel 5.5 is based upon Ubuntu 11.10; Trisquel 6.0 is based upon Ubuntu 12.04) should work.

Hi,
It has been a while since I have worked on this project.
I have been away from trisquel for a while. At the time that I was having trouble with the installer on my cd (see above posts). My plan had been to wait for Trisquel 6 to go stable and try again. I had kind of forgotten about it. I should have time to pick it up again any day now.

An issue you should consider with mate is that some gnome apps are no longer compiled against Gtk 2 (which mate uses) so you won't get a clean look for all applications as a result.

Meanwhile might also consider taking this Distro and Trisquelizing the source lists:

Perhaps mate will be a good alternative for trisquel when the gnome3 fallback is no longer available?
On the other hand, only time will show how solid this project is.

I am soory to say that I am having issues getting a chrooted environment I am using to behave properly (networking isnt working inside the chroot).
I also found out that I will be gone this weekend and will be unable to work on it.
Sorry about the delays on this project.
