Starting this Easter Weekend I am going to build a DIY HTC Vive Clone using a Rockchip RK3399 and Sharp LS055R1SX03. My device will run Trisquel GNU/Linux and libsurvive and meets the criteria for Respects Your Freedom with currently no known blockers. Also it uses the same variant of FPGA that the Talos II uses.

That sounds like an exciting project. It's great to see someone building their own VR headset and using free software to do so. It might be helpful to document your work on the wiki in case anyone else wants to follow in your footsteps. Best of luck with your project, and I hope it turns out great!

The original one (by DMgeek) was still using non-free software (Windows and SteamVR) but the NOLO thing has free software drivers included in OpenHMD. Today I ordered my first component, when that arrives, I'll do the next update.

The display arrived today. I tested it using my Talos II.
