I removed the notification area on my gnome-panel (I don't remember why,) and when I removed it, the wireless connection settings icon reappeared, but squished into a 1 pixel wide space. Nothing happens when I try to add the notification area back.

Alt+Super(Win)+right click. Than add and search from the list.

When I try that, nothing gets added.
Is there any way to reset gnome-panel to the default?

You can try removing it with config and then reinstalling, e.g.

sudo apt-get purge gnome-panel
sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

(Note that that some other packages might depend on it and also get removed. You might want to reinstall those as well in that case.)

Nothing has changed...

Is there some configuration file that can be modified?

Hello, try:

$ rm -f -R .gconf/ .gnome2/

It should take your desktop to the default configuration.
