Hi, how can I remove nouveau driver and related files from the installed system? Thanks.
Hi, how can I remove nouveau driver and related files from the installed
system? Thanks.
Well, searching a little with your package manager easily gives you the involved package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
I believe you want to remove it.
I tried to uninstall nouveau files with Synaptic but it claims EVERYTHING on the system will be removed if I do that. Why does the entire system rely on this one driver?
EDIT: Thanks for the reply. I'll just uninstall that one package. Synaptic says that it will also remove: trisquel, trisquel-desktop-common, trisquel-desktop-common-recommended, trisquel-gnome-base, trisquel-gnome-base-recommended, trisquel-recommended, xserver-xorg-video-all
This seems pretty dangerous?
Removing the packages you list is not dangerous at all. They all are metapackage, i.e., packages that only exist to group a bunch of others for convenience. For instance, "trisquel" depends on the whole default system (hence installing it will install this default system) but, by itself, it does not bring any functionality. Therefore, removing this metapackage (and the other ones you list) will not have any effect.

Okay, for some reason this forum is duplicating my posts....

I don't think Trisquel is going to work for me. Thanks anyway.

We are very sorry you do not want to make the necessary effort to be
free. Please count on us if you do.

Why would you want to do that?
I'm not using the nouveau driver either as I find the nv driver is better on Trisquel 4.0 for video playback.

That's ok, but why do you want to remove nouveau anyway? Does it
interfere with nv in any way?
I didn't remove nouveau - I simply activated the nv driver. But the fact that nouveau is buggy might be a reason for someone to want to remove it.
I'll take a look to the duplicates problem.

Nope, but maybe now. (Sorry about the spamming, btw)
3D support added in Trisquel 4.5, my problems solved. Sorry for the disruption, and thank you!
Okay, actually, problems not solved. I did install the mesa package mentioned in the Trisquel 4.5 release notes to enable the 3D functions on my graphics card, but every time I run something that uses 3D, the entire system locks up and I have to power it off. Running programs in the terminal doesn't show any errors. There are no telltale errors in the system log either. I really need the 3D graphics to work! Any ideas?
There must be some way to make this work. I'm not a programmer and I can't fix this kind of stuff. Trying to work with a free system is getting very frustrating. I can see people talking on this forum but no one has any help for me.
What is your graphic card model? Have you checked it at h-node.com? If not, then please check there if it's listed or not. :)
Thank you grvrulz, I'll take a look. The card is NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT.
The card is listed as totally not supported. So in order to get reliable 3D acceleration I'd have to buy a new motherboard. Cool...

Hello, I've found the 8800 GT but not the 9800 GT listed at h-node. Can you please indicate me where you have found it? If it is not listed, can you please add it and specify that it does not work with 3D? It can be useful to someone else searching for the same device
I guess I misread the entry for 8800. Added a page for it, and hope I did it right as this is my first time working with a wiki. Here is a link to that page:
I listed it as not working with 3D acceleration because aside from the desktop visual effects, everything else I tried caused problems.
