About a month ago, I purchased a Penguin Wireless N USB Adapter for GNU / Linux (TPE-N150USB) and installed it on a mac book pro running trisquel 6.0 following the instructions on the thinkpenguin.com website (https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb).

The card worked immediately as soon as I copied the firmware files to /lib/firmware/

Today I received another identical USB Adapter and tried installing it on my wife's computer in the same way, but could not get it to work. I have restarted the computer to no avail.

Although the mac book pro's are not exactly the same (one is about a year newer than the other) I don't see there are many differences aside from RAM and processor.

Trisquel was installed in exactly the same way for both computers.

I tried blacklisting the b43 firmware thinking it might be causing a conflict (which I did not have to do with the first computer): echo blacklist b43 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-b43.conf

After doing this I just cannot see the option to enable or disable wireless networking anymore, but nothing else seems to have changed.

typing sudo lsusb I can see:

Bus 003 Device 003: ID 0cf3:9271 Atheros Communications, Inc. AR9271 802.11n

Which I think is the Penguin USB Wifi adapter.

Typing iwconfig I get the following:

lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

Does anyone know how I can get the wifi adapter to work? :'(

Thank you!

If you have the same configuration, try plugging in the other
(working) USB adapter. This will at least rule out (or confirm) a
hardware problem. Also try different USB ports.

Thanks MagicFab. I tried the adapter on the other computer and it works fine. The USB ports on the new computer both work fine for everything else. My guess is that this is a configuration problem.

Did you try the live making the suggested changes with the new hardware?

Maybe this additional information can help to understand the problem?

1) I disconnected the USB Wifi

2) I ran:

$ sudo tail -n 0 -f /var/log/syslog

3) This was the output:

If you do some searching online you'll find that this is a known problem and fixed in later kernel versions.

I found this:
http://forum.pinguyos.com/Thread-Wireless-not-working-with-TL-W722N

Which seems to be the exact problem I'm having.

This is my kernel version:

$ uname -a
Linux nsu-gnu 3.2.0-52-generic #0trisquel1 SMP Fri Aug 23 00:17:23 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

thank you jxself. Should I update the kernel? Sorry I'm not very experienced :(

I have an APT repository that makes getting a newer kernel easy. Information and instructions are available at http://jxself.org/linux-libre/

Plus, I have precompiled firmware available at http://jxself.org/ath9k-htc/ - Just drop the two .fw files into /lib/firmware.

The computer that IS working, is running the same kernel version:

$ uname -a
Linux m 3.2.0-52-generic #0trisquel1 SMP Fri Aug 23 00:17:23 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thank you for your help. That is where I got the firmware. I will try getting the new kernel from your repository.
