Hi, I hope somebody can help me, I'm a noob, when it comes to Linux, I have installed Trisquel 4.5 on to my notebook,an Acer Aspire5740.
Its on a duel boot set-up with Win7. The problem is twofold.
1.While Trisquel "sees" my wireless connection and says its running100% when I go to browse , the browser says "problem loading page and cant find the server". All this from a WiFi dongle from the 3 network.
2. I next tried to use my usb dongle (from 3 also) and I can't see any way to enable mobile broad on Trisquel, so I can't update to the latest packages/build??

By the way I was able to post last message by booting back into Windows, I really, really want to give Trisquel a good go, so any assistance would be very well appreciated :)

What is the exact model of your USB dongle?

And what is the "3 network"?

Also, the WiFi dongle is a wireless modem which kinda acts as a "hot-spot"/ access point, and it is a Huawei E5830. In Windows I can use one or the other, and same on my netbook ( which is running Ubuntu, Natty Narwhal 11.04) and the netbook is a Samsung N150. I am trying Trisquel because of an article I read in Linux Format magazine, an interview with Richard Stallman, and I liked his point of view. If this works out, I will most likely ditch Windows and probably Ubuntu, because of the difference between Free software and Opensource software. :)

I searched the Web for you (you should do it) and many results pop out. Obviously the trouble is that kernel recognizes the device as a usb-storage device (SCSI CD-ROM)... and that is not stupid because of it contains a MicroSD card (up to 4GB).

Udev is, in your system, taking care of managing the devices and you can add a rule to tell that this modem, well, is a modem. To do so, in a terminal (in the menu Accessories), with administrator's privileges (hence 'sudo'), edit (e.g., with 'gedit') a file where you will add the rule:
$ sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/50-huawei1550.rules

Here is the rule I found on the Web (e.g., there: http://mathematicalmusings.blogspot.com/2009/07/if-you-want-to-get-huawei-e1550-usb.html ). You should copy-paste it:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb",
SYSFS{idProduct}=="1446",
SYSFS{idVendor}=="12d1",
RUN+="/lib/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type option-zerocd"

Save and restart (you probably only need to restart udev with 'sudo /etc/init.d/udev restart' but well...).

That said I believe the rule is outdated (Trisquel 4.5 has a recent version of udev) and that 'modem-modeswitch' should be changed into 'mobile-action-modeswitch'.

Notice also a strange solution that is said to work: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=852435#p852435

Then you don't use Linux. You use Linux-libre

Have you tried other web pages?

Try this on a terminal.

ping trisquel.info

Possibly the dongle requires non free software.

The information you give is not as orderly or as exact as needed to
understand easily. It would be easier to help if you could re-read your
message several times before sending it to make it very clear. Thank you.
