Problems with SCIM: Unresponsive icon and unresponsive buttons

I installed SCIM recently because I want to type in Japanese, but SCIM caused a few strange problems. The SCIM icon on the gnome panel (the crown icon) only responds to my mouse clicks when I'm using libreoffice or Anki. It won't respond to my mouse clicks at all when I'm using other applications.

SCIM also creates a small panel on my desktop. I can move it around, but I cannot hide it. It also has a few buttons, but these buttons are generally unresponsive. They will only work properly when I'm using libreoffice or Anki.

How can I fix these problems? Did I make a mistake that I'm not aware of? Is there a way to type Japanese without installing SCIM?

Sometimes the SCIM icon and buttons don't work properly even when I'm using libreoffice and Anki. Their behaviour is unusual and irregular.

Apparently something called IBus seems to be able to input Japanese. Maybe try that as well.

Thanks.

I also want to add that although SCIM exhibits strange behaviour, it works reasonably well. I can still type in Japanese. I am not having serious problems with it at the moment. Maybe there's nothing wrong with it and I'm just imagining things.

I use IBus for typing in Japanese. It works well (as long as you're able to get it to work). Thankfully, GNOME has its own input method thing as of version 3.6 I think (I think it might be based on IBus, not sure), which is much easier to set up and better integrated with GNOME Shell, so we'll be getting that with Trisquel 7 when it comes out.
