What do you folks think of this? Any nonfree firmware in there?

I don't know about that but one negative thing I see is they use a proprietary simulator for FPGA design when there are quite a few free options available.

and PULPino is not the only free and open hardware microprocessors, there´s also lowRISC http://www.lowrisc.org/
