Hey everybody,

i'm getting into film making lately and want to do it quite seriously;

Do you know if there's a program that comes close to after effects?
I mean, changing color temperature, contrast, brightness?
If yes, what features are missing?

I used this some time ago

http://www.heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php

it takes a bit getting used to, but then it it really powerful.

there is a feature list if you scroll down a bit, this includes
# Brightness/Contrast
# Chroma Key
# Color balance
# Histogram
# Hue/Saturation

you can also mix multiple video tracks + masks etc etc etc.

Edit: Perhaps you rather want this version, it is community based... They are both GPL, I have only used the original version and was very impressed.

Edit2: Sorry for the many edits, but this seems to actually be the community version: http://cinelerra-cv.org/

Edit3:) This is the instructions to compile from source, http://www.g-raffa.eu/Cinelerra/HOWTO/compilation.html

ok, I was trying to build it in trisquel,
but sadly there is a dependency to libfaac-dev which is non-free.

that non-free library is to make it possible to process aac, I would expect the program to be able to work without it.
I guess more serious hacking than anticipated would be necessary to remove that.

I remember there being a ubuntu package/repo you could add for
cinelerra, a few years ago. search cenelerra ubuntu repo and see what
you get now.
Non-free? hmm i thought i remember acc* libs being in the non-free repo
due to patents but the lib is free software no?

so no compile option to disable that dependency?

the F in FAAC stands for freeware. so it is proprietary software.

Pitivi (by default in Trisquel) has such effects.

All the basic features are there in these free video editors, they are a little unstable and do have the occasional issue when outputting the end video file but for the most part they are really usable and very cool programs.

Unfortunately these creative programs are some of the weaker areas in the free software field in terms of functionality but it is rapidly catching up. Unless you have to do some crazy multi-shot/CGI effect layering/complex colour balancing then you should be perfectly fine.

No no, i just need basic stuff;
not fancy special effects or something!

I just need:
adjust brightness, color temperature, contrast... blur certain parts of the image (once i got a better camera, i won't need this anymore), manipulate lighting;
really nice would be the ability to join two pictures together... i mean, if two characters are having a conversation and i want to play both myself.
a few filters... black and white or something like that;
but that's basically it.

Try using blender for the background effects, combine with pitvi it work for me. I did a small movie, ONLY A MINUTE MOVIE for my daughters birthday.

READ CAREFULLY the link that Supertramp post it.
