I currently go to SanJac because it's the only college my grandparents are willing to send me to because it's close to where i live, and like most colleges nowdays, it's filled with proprietary software, which is mostly why I hate it, at least I can do most of it at home where I don't have to deal with it as much, but apparently they have no idea how bad proprietary software and DRM is considering I got this email from them telling me i could win a Windows 8 tablet or a Nook. Why would I want something filled with DRM and backdoors on top of non-free software?

The University I was attending has a statement on its student page saying "we strongly recommend that students use Google's Chrome browser". They push Microsoft Office, all documents are MS Office format, student email is Microsoft exchange.

Universities and Colleges are clueless about IT.

agreed. Although It seems I'm one of the smartest in my class. The teacher is actually recommending I help out students in my GNU/Linux class. Although they call it Linux and it's officially called a Linux/UNIX class and their test distro is Ubuntu and they're running it in VMware Workstation on Windows 7. the last 3 are kinda annoying since GNU/Linux isn't really UNIX, Ubuntu isn't the best example for a GNU/Linux distro, and both VMware Workstation and Windows is non-free. Fortunately during my time there I was able to tell them about a bunch of free (in both senses of the word) like GIMP, LibreOffice, ThunderBird, GNOME, and KDE Software Compilation. I've also told them about VirtualBox and QEMU/KVM. While the college is most likely not to switch because of the bureaucracy (they barely update their systems and prevent others from doing so, I can get not doing it for security and stability reasons, but when they do update it, it looks like they just use whatever version is the latest. I've probably would've used Firefox ESR instead of Firefox 13). But at least the teacher and students now know about it and hopefully they'll start using them.

The school of one of my students (I help schoolers at home, for mathematics, French and German) has only Mac ! And, for the typewriting course, they must do the course (training lessons) in internet ! (everyone has an account, a password, the scores are registered...)

When I was 12, we had no Mac. Now are schoolers are becoming prisoners of proprietary softwares since the youngest age, already at school !

Hey, tell them about Creative Commons ! And to try to avoid DRM !

In another school, they have half computers with Windows (8 now), have computers with Mac. I can't help them, except to visit Linux world, to think about Penguin.

I had a dream : all schools and universities use free operating systems and free softwares. ;)

If colleges want to teach computer science and programming they should use open source. If they just want to train students to get jobs then I guess they use closed source.

Free Software should become a part of the textbook.
Which is probably a hard thing to manage, because it's so hard to make people care / understand the differences between proprietary software and free software.
Everyone in my family uses the computer purely for web browsing, and they're running windows. I told them (many times) about GNU/Linux and free/proprietary software, but they seem to not grasp the concept and rather stick with windows. They see the computer as some magical object that tells them the news and lets them communicate with their friends.

Ah, you should read my school's IT textbook, then. No, the teacher (who hasn't got a bl**dy clue about Free software as far as I know) doesn't rely on it nearly as much as one can on the distro Gnewsense is based on - and for good reason.
