I'm looking for a program that can handle various formats. But any of .txt, .pdf, and .odt would be great.

Yes. It uses eSpeak or Festival for text to voice.

I typically use Orca with espeak (the default setup), though have
Festival Light as a fallback synth for when espeak dies.

Orca works well, thanks guys. I slowed down the speech rate to make the computer's voice sound a little more natural.

Happy to help!

Since I use Orca constantly, I have the speech rate set at maximum. As
you get used to the spech, you'll find higher rates more comfortable.
