Trisquel 10 - UEFI Only

Hello all,

I am trying to install Trisquel on a new laptop from work. This is a UEFI-Only device. When I boot from the USB I get the GRUB menu with the options to run the live cd, install or install in text mode. Upon selecting these options I get a black screen and nothing happens.

Has anyone had this issue? I'm not sure what it could be. I don't suspect graphics because it has Intel Graphics.

Any suggestions would be great, and I thank you ahead of time.

Check you don't have secure boot turned on.

I tried that. In fact the machine was already set like that because that's how I installed xubuntu. Not sure why Trisquel won't install.

Looks like I may have been wrong about graphics. This laptop has the Intel "Iris XE" graphics. And it may be that I need a live CD with a newer Kernel version than what comes on this ISO.

Another option might be to move the hard disk to a different machine. Then do the Trisquel installation. Add my Linux-libre APT repository to get the very latest kernel version (or whatever newer version you may need): https://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/freesh.en.html

And then, once all is said and done, move the drive back into the desired machine.

So I decided to try and add a newer version of the kernel and make a custom ISO. But this guide seems wrong, or I'm not getting something: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/customizing-trisquel-iso

It has you extract the iso to a folder "tmp" and then copy the contents of the "tmp" folder to a "src" folder but without the "filesystem.squashfs" The rsync command for that seems to be incomplete until you add the tmp/ src/ after it which is in the yellow box under.

Then the next command is to mount the "filesystem.squashfs" from the "src" directory, but you excluded that from the rsync.... so it says the file isn't there. So I'm confused.

I suppose the aramo iso has a rather new kernel (on my desktop with aramo, I have a version of 5.15).

You could try it directly.

That's Trisquel 11, right? Does it seem fairly stable? If I install that, will it eventually get updated to the released version, or will I have to re-install?

I find it hard that we might need to reinstall at this point, meaning all should get via updates, but I can't tell if anyone would warranty that.

Should the text installer work, or is that still in development? It seems to do the same thing as Trisquel 10 did. I wonder if the vmlinuz on that version is still the older kernel?

No, text installer is still under development.

Graphical installer runs, but then fails during GRUB installation with the following:

"The 'grub-efi-amd64' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot."

SUCCESS!

Ok I finally got a working copy of Trisquel, albeit 11 on this laptop. So here is a summary for anyone who is having similar issues.

Laptop:
Dell Optiplex 5520, this is a UEFI only laptop.

Disable Secure Boot at least, you may have to put it into NVME/AHCI mode in the BIOS. It defaults to RAID mode like all Dells.

This laptop has the Intel Iris XE graphics in it, and I think that was the hang up on the older kernel supplied with 10. 11 has a kernel that works.

Anyways to get past the 'grub-efi-amd64 error I did this: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/install-trisquel-90-failure-grub-installation-failed#comment-154057 Suggested by chaosmonk, and I thank him/her for suggesting this!

Hope this helps anyone in the future.

Peace to you all, and thank you for your time.

Just want to say that I have been using Trisquel 11 for 3 months on my main computer (D8 with coreboot installed by Vikings) and, although there were a few minor issues, it has been working really well.
