Trisquel on Acer C720
- Inicie sesión ou rexístrese para enviar comentarios
Hello. Has anyone tried Trisquel in an Acer C720 chromebook? I believe my fans arenot running at the speed that it is supposed to, therefore it shuts down. However I don't feel my laptop getting very hot either.
Usually modern systems will shut down before they overheat so it's possible. Even if the hardware in your Acer is mostly free software friendly there may be support issues. Getting it just right is a bit tricky.

I have one running Debian (Jessie).
Before re-compiling a very recent kernel to include touchpad drivers,
adding boot options and other customization to enable sleep/suspend and
other stuff, I had some spontaneous crashes and reboots. Most
importantly, if I missed typing Ctrl-L at boot it would revert to some
ChromeOS-only boot mode and I'd have to re-install the whole thing. Oh,
and the on/off button being exactly where you find Backspace on most
keyboards didn't help. Also, don't do full encryption unless you like
recovering from failed fsck manually.
So yeah, you may have unexpected reboots. I followed most of the fixes
mentioned here, perhaps we need a specific guide for Trisquel, specially
now that 6.0.1 is out:

Thank you all forresponding. I believe that since 3.13.3 that jxself's libre kernel has added support for this chromebook's touchpad. What boot options did you add to your installation? I remember that I added the parameters for enabling suspend and it would still randomly shutdown (like if the battery was disconnected, not a normal shutdown). I deleted all the partitions in my ssd, is that bad? I think that in this case it wont be able to recover to chrome os in case I don't type ctrl L right? I disabled the shutdown key and I don't encrypt my ssd. It would be awesome that we could get a guide for Trisquel. I hope I don't have to change to Debian since I like having a libre Os in all my computers. Is your Debian enabled with non-free repositories?

I remember trying that and no, it didn't have it. Haven't tried the
latest though.

It's detailed in the link I provided before (you also need to change
other files).

It depends, in my case that's what I wanted. If you want to revert to
the original OS you'll need a recovery USB key from Google
(downloadable), but no, it's not necessarily "bad".

No, you can still recover.

No, I am running w/o the non-free stuff, of course.
I am still experimenting with this system so I may eventually format it
w Trisquel 6.01, I just lack time.
Cheers,

Thank you.

Are you referring to the libre Linux kernel?
LIfe is short. I try not to reinstall every single day :) But yes, I'll
eventually re-test this.
> >Did you only followed the guide you posted? What other files did you

Pretty much, yes. Everything is there.
> > Did you see those kinds of shutdowns in your chromebook?
Yes, after a vanilla install, before upgrading kernels etc.
> > But for recovering i would need the usb with Chrome on it right? Or

Yes, you would need to create the USB key with Chrome on it. If you
reboot and don't type Ctrl-L, it will reverse to some state where it
expects chrome to be there - and it won't, so there you go, you'll have
to reinstall. For this not to happen you need to follow this:
http://johnlewis.ie/how-to-make-seabios-the-default-on-your-acer-c720/
> >I hope you try Trisquel. I'm sure there will be (are) many people

This is probably the only kind of computer I would never do the same
manipulations I did on for anyone else. You can feel the potential to
brick it / make it unbootable so unless you know exactly what you are
doing, are very comfortable with command line, and are willing to
wipe/reinstall, don't get one.
Probably in another 6 mo -1y.!

What do you think are the essential steps from the guide i have to make?
Is it bad i formatted the whole ssd... could that be the reason of the random poweroffs?
Did you make seabios your default bios on your laptop? Will this make it more free? Will it help with the random poweroffs problem? Are there risks too high for doing this?

No.
Yes.
No.
No, this is only related to boot.
The only risk is learning more, as you read (and ask) more.
Thank you for your detailed questions.
Cheers,

Thank you very much Fabian. Can you please guide me to disabling the chrome screen in the beginning? I don't understand the guide that i found over the internet. I'm using Parabola now and i'd like to disable it from there without going back to chrome os. Is that possible? Is it safe? Does it matter what version i was in chrome os even if i wiped all my hard drive?
