Trisquel should have a git system for the community. Hear me out.

As you know, there is the main Git repository that Ruben uses to build Trisquel. We can leave that alone and let him use it as he always has. But what if there is a hosted Git system powered by something like GitLab (https://www.gitlab.com) that community users can signup on and submit/share code?

One example is me creating a free software extension for Abrowser that proves to be helpful. Instead of me hosting it on my site or GitHub, I can have it on the community GitLab instance and if it is worthwhile, it can be merged into the main code. If not, its still there for sharing.

So what do you guys think? This could be helpful as there are many people who would like to develop code free software code but don't want to put it on non-free service like GitHub. With having it hosted here, there is reassurance that the backend is free and the intentions of the project are legit.

Maybe a git lab, maybe a ppa, this kind of community resource sounds like a fine idea! Arch has the AUR for this sort of purpose. Would the community need to appoint a compliance officer to make sure all contributions are duely licensed? Or, should it be a sources-only repository, thus ensuring all can read, modify, etc, the contributions?

Trisquel already has what you describe. Or have you not been paying attention? :)

I'm looking for a sandbox to have playful hacking that isn't connected to Trisquel mainline. A place to host code for those of various skillsets who are passionate.

And I repeat what I said. :)

I don't think you fully understand. I'm not talking about the main Git repo where people can contribute code for the main project. Something else.

I totally understand it, and stand by the original statement.

Why do you have to be snarky in every one of your replies? Oh and one other thing... stop downvoting my posts!!!

I haven't downvoted anything. But it is true that want you want is already available.

I have been thinking about this matter recently. We should consider that according to GNU guidelines accredited distros must not depend on external resources and everything must be done internally.

It seems that we do not have a trusted person in Trisquel project to fill the gap between the community to the main developer(s). And plus that, we do not have a trusted person who can manage the community and set short-term and long-term goals for the community.

We do not have a community-friendly development model, but whose fault it is? Nobody! We do not have that because the governance model of Trisquel says that why should we have a high priority in community participation when one person (or two) can do everything well and accurate?

In my opinion, Trisquel project cannot set a balance between perfection and community involvement. There is no guarantee that community involvement can make the project better, but it can definitely change the atmosphere of community and make the users more loyal.

Anyway, creating official mirrors on Github and Gitorious would be beneficial.
If you are against creating a mirror on github you must also be against Emacs running on Windows.

It's not the same. By porting a free software on a nonfree system you
give freedom to users who already are using a system which don't respect
their freedom. You do them good.

No new user will be driven to Windows solely because Emacs can be run on it.

If you create an official mirror on Github, you drive new users to
Github, which runs nonfree JS and is centralizing Git through that web
interface. You do them wrong and consolidate the monopole of Github.

Think about it.

[edit]

I'm taking part in the new GitLab / Jenkins alpha / beta. If you or anyone else wants to contribute *Belenos* patches by email to trisquel-devel using either the old method [1] (which you'll need to read anyway) or in combination with the new pbuilder method [2] then it would be goodness for the test and I'll field them.

I'm uncertain what the criteria for partcipation in the alpha/beta are, but don't let this email put you off applying yourself if that was what you were planning anyway.

@tct, you are right. But creating a mirror on Gitorious would be OK.

Even though Gitorious runs on Ruby like GitLab, GitLab may be the better solution nowadays.
