Hello

I was reading in the download section that it is advised to check the MD5 file against the downloaded iso, unfortunately I'm still running the big corporation software and there is no instructions on how to verify my download http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/download-trisquel
Does anyone know how to verify my download in windows?

Thank you

To be honest, this is a step you can skip. The image is *probably* in tact perfectly, so can be skipped. Note, that the image *may not* be in tact perfectly. I've installed Trisquel many times perhaps unwisely without checking the images downloaded and nothing's gone wrong.

i think its a good idea to check the md5 file against the iso
you could run a virtual machine in m$ windows
with a gnu/linux distro and then download and check it from there:

and of course if you need help setting up a virtual machine i can help you(i sadly was once a windows user!)

the only libre user friendly vm i can think of for windows(there are ones for gnu/linux)
is virtualbox versions 4.1 and below

virtual box version 4.1 and below is libre software
as long as you dont get the non-free guest addittions program
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_4_1

heres a form post that will explain why the newer versions are libre software:

Hi,

For Windows you can download a free program called md5deep for verifying
the MD5 hash of the file. Their website is here:
http://md5deep.sourceforge.net/

and the download is here:
https://github.com/jessek/hashdeep/releases

(you need the .zip file for Windows)

Alternatively you can check the GPG file for the integrity and
authenticity of the file using a version of GnuPG for Windows:
http://www.gpg4win.org/

Hope that helps!

I em having some problems installing trisquel 64 bit on a pentium 4 with 1g of ram and 80g hard drive. the error I get is installation step failed see attached photo. Just in case someone is wondering about the iso well I used the program trisquel recommended (intrarecorder) on a low writing speed, I did noticed I was not able to select to verify the writing process. Any one know why I cant install trisquel?

I'd recommend against installing it in VirtualBox. If you intend to replace Windows with GNU/Linux, just install Trisquel on your PC.
Running it in VirtualBox is a hassle and waste of time you don't have to go through.
If you *REALLY* want to, use GNUPG to check the ISO, but I *highly* recommend you just burn the ISO on the USB and install Trisquel.
If the installation fails then, then re-download the ISO and re-burn the USB. The odds of installation failing then is low, however.

1st if your on a pentium 4 with 1gb ram you might be better off with trisquel mini

also if you can afford upgrading your pc
getting a ssd would rely rely speed up your pc and
2gb ram should make it run faster aswell

i got a ssd and 2gb ram for my old dell laptop that had a 1.7ghz celetron prosessor
that made in 2001(originally had 512mb ram and 40gb hdd)

and now it runs like a laptop from 2008 insted of 2001!

2nd
could you provide more information please?
what exactly were you doing when the install failed

Hi Tomlukeywood

1.So even if my old pentium 4 is a 3.0ghz processor you wouldn't recommend installing the full version?
2.to answer your question, I was doing anything during the install, just staring at the screen and all of a sudden got that ugly red screen I might ever have nightmares tonight

The problem is more the quantity of RAM. If you open several heavy Web pages (for instance), you will run out of RAM, the system will start using the swap (called "virtual memory" in Windows), i.e., the disk that is something like 10-100 times slower than the RAM. I would therefore advise you to (at least) double your quantity of RAM. It is really worth the US$ 20-30 it will cost you.

That said your old processor raises problems as well. It probably does not have the modern circuits that are specialized in decoding MP4 videos, in virtualizing another system, etc. As a consequence, it will be too slow for such "modern" activities.

i think the prosessor is fine its slower than a i7 but not everyone needs the speed
but for the cost upgradeing to 2gb of ram would allow you to run the normal trisquel
version very well.

is your computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
if your not sure get the 32-bit version as
you dont have enougth ram to take advantage of the 64-bit version anyway

so when it crashed is this as soon as you boot to the cd/dvd
or do you get to a boot menu before it crashes??

if you can give one a video would help.

Any reason why you do not use the graphical installer? I have never tried to encrypt the whole disk. Encrypting the sole /home partition perfectly worked for me. Also, given your hardware, you may want to go with Trisquel Mini (with a light LXDE desktop environment).

You can also download the torrent, most torrent clients have a built in
integrity check tool.

Actually I believe it's a feature of the bittorrent protocol so any client will do.

There is an integrity check tool on the CD. It's the Check Disc For Defects option.

but that would only check for defects on the hard drive right? not the dvd or usb where the OS is located?

No, it checks the installation media.
