Good evening,

My question is the following : Is it possible to install and run VirtualBox and Eclipse on Trisquel OS. I am studying in computer science and I absolutly need those softwares

thanks

I need JavaFX too and it seems mainly proprietary

I don't see why you couldn't...
It just isn't in the repositories, but there are a fistful of ways to install any software in Gnu/Linux distributions.

VirtualBox is in the "contrib" repository of Debian, and the "multiverse" repository of Ubuntu.

This implies that there may be minor freedom issue with VirtualBox.

thanks to both of you
I thought there was something blocking non-free software, but it's silly because it's a restriction of freedom too.
If I remove those software afterwards, would my OS be free again or should I reinstall the OS because some thirdpart applications corrupt it?

It might not be as easy or convenient to install non-free software on
Trisquel compared to other distros, and our documentation and community
don't support non-free software, but it's your system and Trisquel does
not restrict you from installing non-free software if you choose to.

There are two issues here: freedom and security. If you stop using a
non-free program and remove it, and it no longer has any influence on
your life, then freedom-wise everything should be fine. However,
depending on the program I suppose that it is possible security-wise
that it modified your system in some way that persists after removing
the program. I don't know enough about security to know whether this is
something to worry about with VirtualBox or JavaFX.

By the way, Eclipse actually is free software and can be installed
easily from Trisquel's repository.

Proprietary software can modify FOSS applications preferences:

Imagine its documentation is in HTML format or online, and that software
needs relaxed privacy settings for your browser.
It could make you modify these security/privacy preferences and, once
proprietary software is removed, these preferences remain touched.
Same as any other system-wide or user-profile settings.

As a mix of security and freedom of the software issues, I recall seeing years ago that some packages downloaded separately from third-party repositories/providers - seem at least with those not committed to GNU FSDG - can also modify the list of repositories that the package manager knows about.

One problem with VirtualBox is that only a proprietary compiler, Open Watcom, can compile the code of its BIOS. Another problem is the "VirtualBox OSE Guest Additions", which are proprietary: http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/multiverse/v/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso_5.2.11-122181-1/copyright

As chaosmonk wrote, Eclipse is in Trisquel's repository. That repository includes as well OpenJFX 8, which may be all you need.

Isn't there a VirtualBox alternative to use on Trisquel (libvirt)? I remember reading about it here when I was trying to set up Vagrant on Trisquel. I eventually gave up though, it seemed a little complicated to me at the time. I would like to explore this again myself.

I've used Gnome Boxes on Trisquel. Worked quite well if you want a virtual manager with a GUI.

If I'm not mistaken, QEMU uses libvirt.

I use QEMU and, at least the one that can be installed on Trisquel using Guix package manager, it supports reading a configuration file which behaves like setting one virtual machine for each of these files.

I don't know if QEMU from Trisquel has the same option because I didn't upgrade from Trisquel's QEMU to Guix's for this reason, but for development purposes.

It's libvirt that uses Qemu and other virtualization software (KVM, XEN,
OpenVZ, LXC, VirtualBox).

Oh, I see... Thanks for the clarification.
