VLC extremely slow to either stop or launch another video

Self explanatory title for the most part.
When a video is launched and I want to stop it, it takes 20 seconds or so for the orange icon to appear (so, to completely stop).
When I try to launch another video, it's very slow as well. Sometimes it just doesn't work.
I removed it and reinstalled it, but it's the same issue.
The settings don't give me much to try.
I tried to open it from the terminal to get some wrritten feedback, but when opened, double clicking a video doesn't even work.
Anyone had a similar problem?

Same here. VLC 2.2.1 on Trisquel 7.

Mine is also 2.1.6 Rincewind (heh, Discworld).

I didn't do everything properly: I had some vlc data in synaptic even though I removed it from gnome-app-install.
So I apt-get purge vlc, then removed completely (I guess it's the equivalent of purge) anything related to vlc in synaptic. Then I reinstalled vlc through synaptic. Well I tried, but it says it's a broken package that needs to be fixed first. So now I'm looking for how to do that.

Now I blindly (read stupidly) runned a suggested command sudo apt-get autoremove --purge
Now it works, but my gtk theme (the one that comes with Trisquel) is either gone, or it switched to a very basic (in an ugly way) one.

I painstakingly managed to reinstall vlc, and it still doesn't work properly.
There's also some dpkg error message...

I'mm pissed off. I'm gonna reinstall everything.

compiling vlc from source may help(or cause more frustration!):

Thanks, I'll definitely try that.
I actually decided to try a netinstall after all.
That will surely provide its share of frustration ;)
But I'd rather travel lightly (plus I'll probably learn better that way).

installing smplayer or any other videoplayer that uses mplayer may really help a lot, especially if you have slow hardware.

Nah, I got an X200 so I should be fine, but thanks, maybe this might suit me better.
I'm just trying to have a super simplified install.
Phase 1 of the plan worked just right.
Now I need to install the basics, but since I know not much, I have some reading to do.
Seems that I need xorg before installing i3wm and lightdm.

When I'm ready, smplayer with mplayer2 looks like a great contender to VLC!

EDIT

After a fresh install, VLC is working just fine.
