What is ConsoleKit?

Does anyone know if ConsoleKit is needed? Its description reads like it could be a keylogger, but when I try to uninstall it I am warned that many things (including Trisquel) will be removed. Its description is:

ConsoleKit is a system daemon for tracking what users are logged
into the system and how they interact with the computer (e.g.
which keyboard and mouse they use).

It provides asynchronous notification via the system message bus.

This package provides the system daemon and tools to interact with it.

"Tracking" here means knowing if the session belongs to a logged in user
who accesses the computer now. For example, it is used with PolicyKit
to allow you to mount connected storage or poweroff the system without
root priviledges.

It is used also for fast user switching. Newer systems used logind
instead.
