It seems like there are several programs that can measure use of bandwidth. Which are good to tell me, which app is using the internet connection and how much it passes through? Perhaps even to/from where.

You have nethogs in the repo : NetHogs is a small 'net top' tool. Instead of breaking the traffic down per protocol or per subnet, like most tools do, it groups bandwidth by process.NetHogs does not rely on a special kernel module to be loaded.
