Also don't forget to check http://libregamenight.xyz/ it has a new cool design.
:)
Hedgewars. :-)
Red Eclipse, Xonotic, Warsow, Assault Cube (this one has much non-free licence artwork content, as textures), MegaGlest, Stunt Rally.
Are strongly competitive games.
Text games. They use the best graphics card in the world: Your imagination. I'm reminded of the line: "You'll never see our graphics on any computer screen. Because there's never been a computer built that could handle the images we produce. And, there never will be. We draw our graphics from the limitless imagery of your imagination -- a technology so powerful, it makes any picture that's ever come out of a screen look like graffiti by comparison."
I know of dunnet. It is part of Emacs.
> I know of dunnet.
Yes, there's also:
https://jxself.org/git/?p=supernova.git
https://jxself.org/git/?p=beyond-the-titanic.git
There's also some others in git that are in progress.
These are not multi-user though. Chris Webber is working on mudsync though which lets people make a MUD: https://notabug.org/cwebber/mudsync/
It might be a nice is people got together to make something.
https://www.gnu.org/software/8sync/news/mudsync-lisp-game-jam.html has some examples.
Openarena, doom 1/2, hedgewars, scorched3d, torus trooper, domination.
And above all Half Life (free by the year 2056 meh :/ ).
SuperTramp what fork of Doom is libre and working?
There are several, but the ones I tend to recommend are Odamex and PrBoom+.
Odamex is very good indeed. It is very faithful to the original engine and it runs great on older hardware. It also supports multiplayer well. Another good one is chocolate doom (it supports Hexen and Heretic too). Prboom+ is slower (I have old laptops) but more advanced/modern.
Nethack.
I like playing games for a while, not for a whole evening like many people, so my favorite games are 2D simple games that don't require me to remember many names, abilities, etc., and games that I can play just for a while (5-20 minutes) and then continue where I left it. I only support economically or contribute to free culture and free software games. Here are some games that I enjoy:
Minetest
Nobody has mention 0 a.d.? outrageous...
It is a great game, very competitive and well built. But I had no time for play it some minutes more.
I can't really pick one, but 0 A.D., Xonotic, Red Eclipse, Freedoom and dopewars are fun.
I used to play a lot more than nowadays but Battle of Wesnoth in multiplayer is great, Megaglest in local multiplayer network is very addictive as well and of course Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup > https://crawl.develz.org/
I'd like to say Freeciv, but I don't even know how to play. It looks so complex. I played once in easy mode against AI, on the tiniest bit of land.
It took a lot of time, and I got beaten without me knowing why.
Still, it's awesome, I'll try again!
FreeOrion looks nice too.
Beneath a Steel Sky is cool too.
Libre code, non-free assets:
Definitely OpenXcom, and OpenRA.
Why makes me think I need to try UFO: Alien Invasion (fully free).
I've been fixated on the libre version of the game HyperRogue lately. I also love text adventures and ASCII-based roguelikes.
Probably Micropolis or 0ad
Wow, this is fascinating:
https://github.com/SimHacker/micropolis/blob/wiki/History.md
Too bad the game works only with intel CPUs though. But the article above is awesome, thanks :D !!!
RedEclipse and Minetest.
Forgot to add the newly discovered TripleA.
It's kind of like Risk, but more complex. Actually more Like Axis & Allies or something like that.
EDIT:
Also Lgeneral maybe http://lgames.sourceforge.net/LGeneral/
- Prboom
- FlightGear, specially the 2017 versions.
- FlightGear + OSGEarth
I forgot the best ones (non-free data): Quake 1, 2 and 3.
How great was ID Software?
