Wireless Proxy problem - connecting to freenode on IRC

I have a working wireless connection. I can reach the internet on it using Abrowser.

To get the wireless to work, I needed to set up a proxy. Thanks to malbert, I was able to do this by installing proxydriver:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/proxydriver/

Apparently, you cannot configure proxys in trisquel 5.5 with the default installation. (I think that proxydriver ought to be automatically included in future releases of trisquel.)

Anyway, my problem is that thought I can reach web pages on wireless, I cannot reach freenode on irc. I have edited the connection in pidgin and tried the different possibilities for proxy settings, entering the ip address, username and password and trying socks4 socks5 html and so on. It didn't work.

I also tried using xchat and chatzilla - they couldn't reach freenode either.

What should I do? I can use freenode if i connect using mobile broadband using pidgin and xchat...

Thank you for the help!

Isn't the port 6667 filtered by some firewall?

Maybe I can solve this by trying to reach freenode by webchat.
How would I reach freenode #trisquel by doing webchat in Abrowser? (ChatZilla is installed by the way, but I can't reach freenode with ChatZilla.)

I will try and check with IT about whether port 6667 is firewalled.

Incidentally, I don't seem to be able to reach anybody with linphone, either. Is that on a firewalled port too?

Any port can be filtered.

Thank you, Magic banana!

How can I check which ports are open on this wireless connection?

I am really not knowledgeable when it comes to networking. I guess the "Network Tools" I can find in the GNOME Shell menu (I believe they are easily accessible in GNOME Classic too) must be helpful... but I do not really know how to use them. In the terminal that would be 'nmap'... but again, you will need to read some documentation and rely on somebody else to help you.

I can do a webchat on freenode using chrome and this url:

http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=trisquel

I think this does not permit you to be cloaked, though. I don't know if webchat works in Abrowser on Trisquel - i will try it later.

I think I have isolated the problem.

Mobile broadband is with one ISP. Wireless is with a different ISP.

The wireless ISP blocks IRC. It also blocks popular VPN providers like hotspot shield.

I will contact my VPN provider and see if I can get it set up in Trisquel. Then I might be able to use Pidgin to reach freenode.
