I recently baught a new PC from ThinkPenguin which I upgaded to Trisqel 5.5.
To get 3D acceleration I installed Mesa 8 (the latest version) and was able to play OpenArena. Sometimes I expierenced a X11 crash, but I can still log in over SSH and start audio applications such as mplayer. I can even watch movies using mplayer if X11 is not running anymore. But I cant restart X11 over SSH.

for watching movies I use mplayer -vo fbdev

I'd suggest sticking to the releases from Trisquel.

Here is what is in the repository:

Ubuntu 12.04/Trisquel 6: 8.0.2
Ubuntu 11.10/Trisquel 5.5: 7.11

I'm not sure we have tested OpenArena with any Intel graphics chipsets- not that I can recall for sure anyway. We did test it with the 9500GT and I think we might have tested it with what I believe was an older Intel graphics chipset. However not on hardware we ship.

Going to try it with Trisquel 5.5 now. Will report back.

Ok,

With Trisquel 5.5 and Mesa 7.11 I didn't run into any problems. Try that.

You shouldn't need to do anything other than install openarena.
