This is a terrible default, to run arbitrary programs found on removable media.
To see what I'm talking about:
System Settings -> Details -> Removable Media
The bottom-most dropdown is labeled "Software" and defaults to "Run Software". It really needs to be set to "Ask what to do", or, for even more security, "Do Nothing" or "Open Folder". Anything but what it's set to right now.
Confirmed. As you can see https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/OS/RemovableDevices it's the upstream default, in the name of usability. Presumably to make Gnome more user friendly to computer pathogens as you imply. You might want to raise the issue with Gnome. Meantime, Trisquel will undoubtedly locally configure away from it.
