The 'About' window (Help -> About) in VLC media player(version 2.1.4 Rincewind) describes "VLC media player is a free and open source media player..."
As per GNU FSDG 'Words to Avoid" [1]
"The term “FOSS,” meaning “Free and Open Source Software,” was coined as a way to be neutral between free software and open source, but it doesn't really do that. If neutrality is your goal, “FLOSS” is better. But if you want to show you stand for freedom, don't use a neutral term."
Please rephrase 'free and open source media player..' to something like 'Free/Libre media player..' to avoid confusion with Open Source Ideology.

This seems a bit picky to me. There are other programs in the repositories such as LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio) that don't follow the FSF's wording recommendations, but it seems like a poor reason to modify or fork it.
If the VLC people chose to associate with the ideas of Open Source instead of Free Software, that is up to them and they words shouldn't be changed.
Yes quidam; You are right.
It is upto VLC community to choose whether they want to support Free Software Philosophy or Open Source Model.
I am extremely happy; at least some of the package maintainers, like you, really value free software culture and follow it.
