After months and months of trying to get a satisfactry performance from a laptop with an sis 771/671 integrated GPU I stumbled upon the attached zipped xorg.conf file.
Just copy it into /etc/X11/
The monitor on my test Advent 5421 running Trisquel mini 8.0 is 1280x768 @ 61Hz which gives satisfactory playback of video at a decent definition.
Sadly the dreaded hibernate during boot when the GPU is initialised issue still occurs - although this is not exclusivly a Trisquel problem it seems to be a GNU/Linux issue as the same thing seems to happen whatever the distro. Assuming as the sis chipset is so old I doubt it will ever be resolved.
Sadly this method is hobbled when viewing video using the latest kernel.
Sadly the support for old hardware gets deprecated on every major kernel release.
There are designs and practical challenges by maintaining old hardware, and I believe that's part of a larger discussion.
I'm marking as won't fix.
Please feel free to add any feedback.
Regards.
