The quick start guide included in calibre is licensed under a Creative Commons Noncommercial license. In addition the guide contains a link to a proprietary software "book designer".
Assigning to upstream:
Debian Bug #653328 (calibre: Calibre Quick Start Guide under Non-Commercial License)(fixed upstream)Debian Bug #690467 (Calibre quick-start guide advises user to use "Book Designer" (probably non-free) program not in Debian)
Issue has been fixed upstream in version 0.8.64. Waiting for it to make it's way into Trisquel
The link to the proprietary tool (for windoze, no less) still remains, on page 14.
Here's the new file http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=22;filename=quick_start.epub;att=1;bug=653328
(Can be opened for example with the fbreader package)
Forgot about that part. I have emailed the author, maybe see if he is willing to remove that part. Maybe he will be ok with just leaving the reference to Sigil in there because that is free software.
It would be better to get this issue fixed upstream if possible because then all distros packaging calibre would benefit from the change vs if we just alter it here at our level.
If he is unwilling, since it is now under a free license I will just alter it myself. But lets hope he is willing to do so.
Yeah, that'd be better for all. Since the tool is only in Russian, it's not very useful for a lot of people for that reason too.
Let's see how it goes.
I have not recieved an email back from the author. I have made a Debian bug about this asking them to remove the reference. They may do that because that program "Book Designer" is not useful to them in any ways. It isn't in English, it is probably proprietary, and isn't even included in Debian.
Debian Bug #690467 (Calibre quick-start guide advises user to use "Book Designer" (probably non-free) program not in Debian)
On Trisquel 7, it references neither Sigil nor the nonfree program. However, it probably still does in 6.
The false assertion that a program in Russian is not useful aside I found what appears to be a Russian libre software directory which lists Book Designer as 'proprietary freeware.' http://lfcon.ru/fsw.php?id=849
A backport from Belenos won't work because of Qt dependencies. So here is my work so far
https://devel.trisquel.info/leny2010/package-helpers/commits/fsdg/ui5426-calibre
The package needs testing when I can build it.
Merged and built.
The fix won't update copies in existing installations where calibre first run has already copied it into a user's personal Book Library. The user will have to copy
/usr/share/calibre/quick_start.epub
manually to get an FSDG copy.
You missed the bigger issue - the documentation is still under the nonfree CC-BY-NC-SA license.
The quickstart guide says "Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License". What file is under nc license?
Are you on belenos or toutatis?
This bug only affects toutatis, and the quickstart guide of the latest version, 0.8.38+dfsg-1+6.0.1trisquel1, says "Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License."
Oh, I'm in Belenos. If that is the case we should simply copy the file from the Belenos version into the Toutatis one.
