Mate sound applet crashing

Just installed Trisquel about 11 days ago, have been updating regularly (almost daily) via Synaptic. I'm using the current Mate Desktop environment.

My system is a Dell Optiplex 9020, i7, 16Gb ram. My mouse input is a Microsoft Trackball Optical 1.0 for PS/2 and USB. Let me know if you need specific information. It is connected via USB, not connected to the system PS/2 mouse input.

When I place my pointer over the sound applet in the taskbar, Trisquel has an issue.

In Ubuntu-Mate, I've been able to scroll the trackball scroll wheel/up or down, and the sound volume rises or lowers. In Trisquel, the scrolling action immediately causes the applet to crash with no impact on sound volume. The details of the applet is "Indicator Applet Complete 1.12.1". A message appears asking if I want to reload the applet, I always chose yes to reload the applet, but the reloading does't change the crash event.

I have disabled the sound output of the internal speaker on the system board, because for sound, I use a Bluetooth speaker via a BT adapter. The BT speaker setup produces sound as expected and has worked in Ubuntu-Mate, but this is the configuration where the applet crashes in Trisquel. If, instead of rolling the scroll wheel, I instead choose to slide the volume slider left or right, the applet does not crash and works as expected.

Any ideas?

TIA.

FWIW, I also have issues where Caja will hide and unhide or crash, when I use the same trackball input device, but not yet asking for assistance on that problem. One problem at a time!

Does it work with another mouse?

Did you install Trisquel 8 ?

If so, someone reported a similar problem here: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/indicator-applet-complete-quit-unexpectedly

Reinstalling seems to have solved it at the time.

Thanks folks.

Lutes: Initial discussion there is similar, remainder of discussion is not all the same issue. The linked post says "Topic Locked", so I'll try reinstalling the applet itself, if I can determine which package it is included in (I haven't looked yet).

Magic Banana: I have no desire to use a different pointing device, as I have a carpal tunnel injury from early 2000's.

Trisquel is installed, as stated in my first post, not a live session from optical media.

That is not what I asked. I was asking if you had plugged in another mouse to discover whether the problem was specific to the mouse you use or general.

Sorry, my question was not precise enough. It should have read: did you install Trisquel 8 or Trisquel 9?

Missed this post, sorry.

I've installed "trisquel_8.0_amd64". Didn't realize there was a 9.0 release, don't see it on https://trisquel.info/en/download

Right, Trisquel 9 is only available here: http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso-etiona/iso.

Many former Trisquel 8 users have already installed it or upgraded so I guess it would be a safe bet. The sound applet problem does not seem to have been reported so far by Trisquel 9 users.

EDIT: the problem has positively been reported not to be present on Trisquel 9: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-9-graphical-iso-available-testing#comment-145790

I can positively report that this problem is corrected in Trisquel 9 after I installed 9 on my system.

Thanks!

I searched in Synaptic for "Indicator", found an installed package titled 'indicator-application'. Opened the Synaptic properties for that entry, doesn't mention applet. I then went to the Ubuntu link for that package, there it states it provides the 'indicator applet'. Since this is what is described as crashing, indicator-applet, I reinstalled it Why is that not listed in the Synaptic description for Indicator Application? I logged out, logged back in, same crash.

Searched Synaptic again, found 'indicator-sound', and 'indicator-sound-gtk', will reinstall those, logout and retest once again.

Nope, reinstalling 'indicator-sound' and 'indicator-sound-gtk' did not correct the crash.

Nope, still crashes.

Reinstall packages, log out, log in again, still crashing.

It hasn't been officially released, but it is probably a good idea to upgrade at this point. Trisquel 8's version of MATE is four years old. Many bugs have been fixed since then.

Might you offer a link?

Not found at http://mirror.fsf.org/trisquel-images/

Never mind, link is above.
