Although I do not use MATE, I believe you can add to the panel (try right-clicking on it) something to visualize the workspaces and navigate between them with clicks, i.e., in an inefficient way: it is worth using keyboard shortcuts.
Thanks! Also, Is there a hot corner feature in Trisquel?
I looked around to help you with this, but I couldn't find it. I don't believe that MATE has a hot corner. MATE is just the old version of GNOME, you can install the newer version with
sudo apt install gnome-shell
--which does have a hot corner.
To access different workspace, right click the MATE panel (something likes the Windows task bar), then select Add to Panel from the context menu. In the resulting dialog window, scroll down and select Workspace Switcher.
To use "hot corner", you'll need a desktop environment such as Gnome or Cinnamon. Use one of the following commands to install one of them:
sudo apt install gnome
sudo apt install cinnamon
You can select which DE to use at the login screen.
sudo apt install gnome
That would install the whole GNOME desktop environment. Probably not what one wants on top of another full-featured desktop environment: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-gnome-shell
I once used certain distribution with two fully blown DEs (Gnome and KDE) installed simultaneously. There wasn't much conflict.
There should not be conflicts. It is just that one probably does not want two instant messengers, two picture viewers, two PDF readers, two e-mail clients, two calculators, two video players, two music players, etc. Installing the "gnome" package on Trisquel (not NetInstall), one indeed ends up with two programs for most tasks: the GNOME program and the program in the default system.
