How Can I help?

How can I help the project? I am not a programmer, but I am a Technical Writer by trade. I can write technical documentation, marketing slicks, video tutorials, etc.

I do not have much cash, but I am willing to donate my time and skills! I think Trisquel is one of the better distros/prjects out there. I agree with the philosophy and the approach. Yet, unfortunately, not as well known as the others (95 on Distrowatch :/).

Let me know how I can help in the most effective way.

One of the most important things IMHO is for documentation to be accurate, thorough, up-to-date, and easy to navigate and search:
http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/documentation

That way, when users come across problems, they can use the instructions in the documentation to fix them. Being able to just link the appropriate page in the documentation will reduce the load of user support work being done in these forums, as well as bug reports on problems actually caused by user error.

Mr DennisD, what Trisquel really needs are developers. That is programmers that can commit code to Trisquel to solve the issues (http://trisquel.info/en/project/issues).
If u can do some marketing slicks to attrack programmers to Trisquel project, most of us will be celebrating with lots of beers, till our eyes rolls back :-)

This I could do. Let me work up a few ideas.

What level of skills are required to be a Trisquel developer? I am a novice programmer, having only learned a few scraps of BASIC, Pascal, C#, and Python. The most ambitious things I've ever programmed was a text-only 2 player version of the BattleShip board game (using IDLE https://wiki.python.org/moin/IDLE). I'm happy to help if I can, but I would need some active mentoring from Trisquel team members, at least at first. Anything I'm taught, I would be happy to teach to others if needed.

"I am a novice programmer"

I would say

MANDATORY:

- SHELL
- BASH
- C
- C++
- GIT
- Understanding on how things works
- Knowledge on conf files
- Understand the Debian and Ubuntu way
- Read the manuals of the corresponding software
- Read the documentation of what you're working on.
- Have a system to test it (preferable)
- E-MAIL, for contacting purposes

DESIRABLE:

- SED
- PYTHON
- XML
- Understand different kind of licencing

Please, if you're not into these things and you never done a complicated script on bash, stay away of it. You can make things worst.

Anyway, you could ask David, quidam, Legimet, etc. what they think the skills should be.

Hi, again. Here's a thread about advertizing Trisquel http://trisquel.info/en/forum/advertising-trisquel-floss and its results https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/marketing

As you can see, the aim was for users to switch to Trisquel but there's nothing about to help Trisquel in developing it.

Probably you can contact sum of the guys on that thread to team up something.

I made a separate thread for ideas for adverts to atract developers here http://trisquel.info/en/forum/atrack-developers-trisquel

Another way to help would be to help me to do a text to fix the free of speech issues going on on the English Trisquel forum to asked our project leader to go back with the voting absurdity as it serves only to segregate users and groups of users and not allow free of speech and, of course, to the use of misusing it for the purpose that was given about a year ago: to combat spam by the community itself.

antiesnob: just ignore the downvoting and surf the forum without js so you can see the downvoted ones without them being hidden or whatever.
