Trisquel/GNU/Linux Blog

I was thinking of starting a blog of my experiences with Trisquel and GNU/Linux.
It would be cool if this could be a community effort and I'm checking here to see if anyone is interested in working together. I'm not interested in a top down but bottom up approach where everyone is a contributor.
The topics could be technology/society along with our personal experiences with Trisquel and GNU/Linux. For example, I've been writing some scripts and setting up an all console configuration.
I would be happy to contribute to your blog. I think it's a great idea.
Autistici gives free hosting for volunteer projects. Self-hosting may work as well.
Adfeno, Cyberhawk, and I worked on a new-user guide together. Adfeno and I were thinking of uploading it somewhere so that people could use it, and edit it if they like. I haven't talked to him in a few days, so I'm not sure where we are on that.
What about on Trisquel's wiki?

Muhammed,
Cool. I already have a hosting plan with Dreamhost and adding another domain would not cost anything. In the past I've worked on blogs myself and it was pretty boring. I'm interested in the collaborative side of things and also sharing my experiences with the community since all the software I'm using now I got for free. I'll be in touch soon.
Cool, that sounds good to me
I currently have a blog in Persian and write about Trisquel, GNU, etc. (http://salman-m.blog.ir)Plus that, I am writing a complete guide on Trisquel in Persian (using LaTeX) but I am on the beginning of the road. (https://launchpad.net/trisquel-beginners).
I think that I can help.
Awesome. I'm in the process of setting things up now.
Me too; I would love participate in such a blog.
I thought of making an own some time ago;
Of course it is very good to share experiences and knowledge about free software / gnu linux, but I'm also very concerned about people who know very little about technical things and don't know how to free their computing / why it is necessary.
I'm encouraged by the interest here. Hope this can be a real collaborative effort. Just talking with my father about PRISM and Windows NS8 got his attention. We are so dependent on technology and very few of us really know what is going on.
An excellent idea, ngawang.
Almost 20 years ago, The Linux Information Project started an education site. The format is clean and would work very well for a 'Trisquel Information Project' to which members could contribute anonymously.
If your proposed site would offer both private and public forum membership options, as well as a community blog, we will be glad to serve (pun intended).
The inability to manage settings on this current forum reminds one of facebook timeline, but with no controls. :-)
Many similar projects are ongoing from the 'old-geeks' groups. Remember COBOL, Unics, UNIX, and ARPANET? Don't fear anyone - just use their resources for good!

Originally I was thinking of a Wordpress blog on GNU/Linux in general but since I am closest to the Trisquel community and use it myself it might focus on that. I would also like to include general linux programming/scripting posts and maybe even general technology/society stuff. Right now the idea is just getting started but I have a domain www.g33kout.org. Things like a wiki, forum, etc. could be added easily. The main thing for me is we put together something a lot of people can use and contribute to. I mentioned above I have run blogs by myself and it was not very satisfying. So I hope we can put together a public, collaborative space.
When selecting a domain name, we should think about our audience,
"Geek" suggests that the subject matter is a niche interest. Proprietary software affects all kinds of people, and not just people who identify as geeks.
I agree. We should better refer to free software or the goal of a free digital society in general.
Sounds like we should be clear about what the blog's main focus will be and choose a name accordingly. I like the focus on free software and a way to present these issues to a wider non-technical audience. Also, HOWTO's and our own experiences with GNU/Linux. Basically, sounds like we can approach the issue of free software from non-technical and technical points of view. I guess initially I was thinking it would be for people who are already somewhat tech-savvy but appealing to a wider audience is a nice suggestion.
I believe howtos had better been contributed to the "official" documentation.
Sure. How about we start brainstorming domain names? While I think the name is really cool you make a good point.
I'll private-message you a few ideas ngawang.
I like Andrew's planet idea. And I agree with MB and ssd; Trisquel.info is an obvious place for this kind of info.
But you seem motivated to make your own site, so I think you should go for it. Getting a small team together, choosing topics, and building a community. It sounds like fun. And you may have more freedom about how you approach things, than if you pursue this through the official Trisquel site.
The contributers should choose a free license for the work. Like the GFDL. This way, the Trisquel community can adapt (or adopt) relevant parts for this site's official documentation.
I was just thinking with my t-shirt's buttons, how about Freedom Sweet Freedom.
Best regards, ADFENO.
Have a nice day.

How about a Planet instead, which aggregates blogs?
E.g. this software:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_%28software%29
Examples of planets I occasionally read:
http://planet.gnu.org/
https://planet.gnome.org/
http://planetkde.org/
http://planet.ubuntu.com/
A Planet Trisquel would be cool.
Andrew.
The ideas about Planets and blogs are very interesting.
As for the Wordpress blogs, I also have an account on wordpress.com, and I also contribute to two collaborative Wordpress blogs, and also have a personal blog.
I am indeed interested, but since I am attending high school (and will continue until 2017, if everything goes as expected), and also because I have other projects besides the blogs (including the making and translation of the user's guide for GNU+Linux Trisquel, the translations of Japanese comic books, the translations of European English comic strips, etc), it'll take some time until I can make some contribution to it.
Best regards, ADFENO.
Have a nice day.
I was thinking of something less specific than just free software or Trisquel and those issues would be just one aspect. What I am mostly interested in is a collaborative effort where people post different things related to tech, computing, science and even geeky pop culture things.
It would be fairly decentralized in that the anyone can sign up for an account and post without any else's approval. The only purpose of an admin is to maintain a consistency of look and feel, etc.
Whoever contributes could just do it at their leisure. For example, right now I'm working on a backup script based on duplicity and want to write articles about that and post the code, etc. I also have a project to setup a console only version of Trisquel on an old laptop I could write about.
The main point is the contributions would be original in the sense they reflect something the author did or an opinion on some issue related to GNU/Linux for example and not simply reposting articles from other sites.
Due to its organic nature it is also impossible to know exactly how it will grow but I'm really interested in the idea of a decentralized project and seeing where it would go.
I've set up a blog at www.g33kout.org. Anyone who signs up gets author status with the added feature you can manage categories.
I'm in the process of setting up an *unofficial* Trisquel Planet now on
my VPS. To avoid any confusion, I'll be noting that it is indeed
unofficial at the top of the page.
Wordpress blogs (and maybe others) allow you to "categorise" posts so
that it will generate feeds for each of those categories. It would be
nice if any bloggers who want to be in this unofficial planet could tag
their posts as "Trisquel" or similar to avoid filling it up with
non-Trisquel-related stuff.
Finally, I can also add g33kout.org feeds to the unofficial planet as
well. But it would be nice if there was a way of separating different
people's feeds. Maybe the best way is for each contributor to tag their
own posts with their own name? (I'm not a Wordpress guru). Then those
will appear in the Planet under that author's name.
I might start contacting some people with existing blogs to see if they
want to be added to the planet.
Andrew.

Also, all Trisquel users are welcome to send me a link to their feed, so
I can add it. Email me at firstname at roffey dot org (replace
"firstname" with my firstname).
Just for reference, Trisquel does have an official Planet, but it looks
a little bit empty. :-(

Why don't we contribute to this (already visible, available) resource
instead?
Does anyone know how to request an addition to it?

You might be able to get Ruben's attention on the IRC channel.
Andrew.
Sorry, been busy with assignments/exams. I've setup a basic Planet
instance if anyone's interested:
It's rather quiet at the moment. Anyone else got Trisquel-focused blog
feeds?
In the next week I'll prod quidam on IRC and see if he might consider
setting up the official Planet.
Also, whilst being very careful about not censoring anybody, I am
asking that any contributors will follow the Trisquel Community Guidelines:
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/trisquel-community-guidelines
But I am sure this won't be a problem anyway... :-)

Hi Andrew,
I welcome any and all new resources about Trisquel, but I'll repeat a
question I asked before, why is this not implemented using the existing
Trisquel Planet on trisquel.info?
Cheers,
F./

Is the Troll Hole meant to be a general board? For topics that aren't specifically about Trisquel?
If general (non-Trisquel) topics/questions are best left off trisquel.info, perhaps someone could set up a a forum for that.
There are five people (only one real programer/coder) in our office working on marketing materials and testing of Trisquel installs, mostly on 2 to 5 year old laptops and desktops. We can't post content to the Trisquel Planet, nor can we find the microblog from the link. This is the message: "Cannot GET /group/trisquel"
On a happy note, the yellow 'Trisquel for Dummies' booklet is coming along nicely, but we do need to know which logo to use on the USB thumbdrives and gift boxes for holiday gifts.
My friend Micah at Oasis will handle the CD and DVD designs. Testing and updates to Trisquel Pro and Trisquel Edu distros is going well. Interns and volunteers are doing desktop themes for their crowd and one for my business associates. A 16 GB USB drive should be enough space for Trisquel plus any security software and files. Several friends have told me they encrypt everything on laptops and /boot from a thumbdrive for security.
The domain for 'Team Trisquel USA' is www.Trisquel.us, currently forwarded to Trisquel.info. The college teams will each have a section on the forum, blog, chat rooms, and social networks and interns and volunteers can work from dorm rooms, home, or computer labs on campus. We hope to recruit more help at the career days this month.
I'm going to California to visit Mark about reviving a project in hopes that he will help design a good Trisquel launch over here. He was the first internet marketing ebook author - although Al Gore is claiming that title too! :) www.constructzero.org -- a worthy cause --
